Save up on gems as much as possible.

In terms of looting, coming up a formidable team will always be reliable and will ensure you a two star victory but effective thriftiness on looting troops will also be helpful. A strategy of using archers and barbarians is one of those techniques. You may use the barbarians’ larger health to protect your archers from getting killed before you are able to loot those resources. Similarly having a giant and archer combination will also be helpful on looting resources on town halls alike to yours.
